“The more things change the more they remain the same,” says Geneva-on-the-Lake businessman Don “Woody” Woodward. “Yep, the rumors are true; the former Woody’s World Arcade and Waterslide complex IS going to be an arcade again, but as an entirely different concept.”
Owners Dave Otto and Don Woodward are creating a totally new venue for the resort village: “Game ON! – An Arcade and Sports Pub.”
In the above photo, auctioneers sell off the old arcade games at Woody’s World, October 2016. Read about it on The Wave.
“It really is a melding of three popular existing concepts: an amusement games arcade, a sports-oriented bar, and a social gathering place with board games and comfortable seating,” continued Woodward. The venue will have full bar service, including specialty drinks.
While geared to young adults, “Game ON!” will be family-friendly. There will be a selection of modern prize- awarding games like Skeeball and basketball; a selection of classic videos, pinballs, and other amusement games. All games will be entirely new to the operation, as the old Woody’s World Arcade was sold down to the bare walls last October.
According to co-owner Dave Otto, they’ve been following the trend of the “Barcade” concept trademarked in New York City and spreading throughout redeveloping tourist areas.
“What makes ‘Game On!’ unique is the addition of the social aspect and the sports bar. It’s not just a bar with some games spattered about. This complements the other attractions at “The Landing,” such as 2016’s addition of ‘Murphy’s Irish Pub’, the outdoor ‘Sunset Bar’, and of course the well-known Swiss Chalet and Old Firehouse Winery. With the addition of ‘Game On!’ we’ll have quite an entertainment complex in this corner of Geneva-On-The-Lake,” Otto concluded.
The waterslide has been sold and that ride is scheduled for removal in the spring. In that area, outside activities for “Game On!” are planned, such as volleyball, shuffle board, and Bocce ball courts. “We’re still in the planning stages for the outside activities,” said Otto.
Stated Woodward, “We’re going to have some fun with this; since this is such a new concept, we can be flexible with different ideas and promotions. We’re anticipating the arcade games will be all on electronic ‘swipe cards’, similar to a rechargeable debit card. We can do flexible pricing promotions, and additionally, all game winnings will go right on the card. No messy ticket counting like a “Chuck E. Cheese.”
“Game ON!” is anticipating a May 5 opening, with a Grand Opening celebration tentatively scheduled for June 24-25.
