Great Happening:

Night at the Races to benefit Unionville Tavern work

As horse racing fans approach the Triple Crown season, The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society will be hosting “The Unionville Derby… A Night at the Races”, on April 28, 2018, from 6pm – 10pm, at the Geneva Community Center, in Geneva, Ohio. It will be a fun night of virtual horse racing, food, drinks, music, auctions, and betting…. and all in an effort to raise funds to “Restore the Tavern!” Tickets are $25 per person and include food, beverages, music, and horse racing!

Tickets are available online at: . In addition, tickets are available for purchase at Wit & Wimsy, 1940 Hubbard Road, in North Madison, Ohio. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the Unionville Tavern, 7935 South Ridge Road, Madison, Ohio, on Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 9am to Noon.

George Hopper’s Elmwood house still stands on County Line Road.

The event will honor the history of horse racing in Unionville. George Hopper, an executive of the Standard Oil Company and associate of John D. Rockefeller, lived in Unionville and maintained a thriving horse farm. He bred and raised champion racers and hosted races, at Elmwood Farms, in Unionville. The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society is excited about highlighting the history of the region, while raising funds to sustain our preservation effort.

Phase I of the preservation work focused on a new roof and the portico columns.

The Unionville Tavern Preservation Society is engaged in an ongoing campaign to restore and preserve the Unionville Tavern, and to re-purpose the historic landmark, as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose educational, arts, and community events center. The Society recently completed the Phase 1 Restoration program, providing a new roof, restored portico, and rehabilitated pillars. Additional efforts are under way to move forward with Phase 2.

The Unionville Tavern is celebrating its 220 year old birthday this year with an expanded calendar of events! We invite the public to join us as we start the season of Tavern events, with “The Unionville Derby…. A Night at the Races”. We will have an evening of fun and entertainment, along with updates on the project.
